Finding the Right Information
The best thing you can do before you call is to know your machine’s information. Knowing the make and model of your machine is just the start. To make the ordering process as smooth as possible,
be sure to locate your machine’s serial number. The location of the informational plate with the serial number will differ depending on the make and model of the machine, but once you locate it take a photo and have it ready to send
to your parts specialist.
It’s important to have this information because on occasion, there may be breaks in the serial number where machines before that point have one part and machines after the serial number break have a different part.

What To Do If You Can’t Find Your Machine’s Serial Number
Not all is lost if the serial number plate is damaged, worn, or missing. The final drive in your machine may contain its own serial number information, which can be used to order the correct part.
To locate this specific serial number you will have to get beneath the machine and remove the cover from the final drive itself.
Important Tip:
Follow safety procedures when doing this. Never go beneath a machine when it’s on, let everyone else on site know what you’re going to do, and make sure that if there’s lock-out procedures that they’re followed.
What Else to Know
Beyond the serial numbers for your machine and final drive, it’s important to know a few key details about the part itself. While you’re under your machine looking for the serial number, take the time to count the number of ports on the side of your drive. The number of ports determines if you have a single-speed or dual-speed motor. If your machine is a skid steer, CTL, or multi-terrain loader, you should see either four or five hydraulic ports on the speed motor. Four ports means you need a single speed motor while five ports means you need a two speed motor.
Other things to look for and keep handy are:
- • The number of bolts used to install the final drive—take note of the number of bolts on both the flange that attaches to the sprocket and the flange that attaches to the undercarriage.
- • Other information on the final drive tag—this can include displacement, reduction ratio, date of production, direction of rotation and more.
Once you locate this small tag, take a picture and have it ready when you order.
Final Thoughts
It’s important to have as much information ready as you can to speed up the ordering process and to get the correct part the first time. With the right preparation before you make that call for your replacement final drive, you can prevent downtime and ensure that you get what you need to get back to work.
