Galvanized Square Pipe Types/Manufacturers/Advantages

Galvanized square pipe is a common type of pipe in the pipe manufacturing industry. It’s a rectangular pipe with a protective coating of zinc. It’s essentially a combination of the most common square pipe and galvanized pipe.

Galvanized Square Pipe Types

Whether it is a square tube or not, there are two types of galvanized layers, one is hot-dip galvanized layer and the other is cold-dip galvanized layer. Different galvanizing methods have different performances. You can read the two types carefully to choose the most suitable galvanized layer for your square tube.

Hot Dip Galvanized Square Tube

Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing the square tube in a 450-degree hot zinc bath. The thickness of the hot-dip galvanizing is very thick, reaching 80-15μm. The galvanized square pipe produced in this way has extremely strong corrosion resistance and is very suitable for use in extreme environments.

Electro Galvanized Square Tube

Cold galvanizing is a process of electrolysis that deposits zinc on the surface of the square tube. The galvanized layer in this way is only 10-30μm, so the corrosion resistance of cold-dip galvanized square tubes is far inferior to that of hot-dip galvanized square pipe, and is often used in some light corrosion scenarios.

How To Distinguish The Types Of Galvanized Square Pipe?

If you have a galvanized square tube in front of you and you want to quickly distinguish whether it is a hot-dip galvanized square tube or a cold-dip galvanized square tube, you can use the following methods.

  1. Hot-dip galvanized square tubes are silver-gray or dark white, while cold-dip galvanized steel tubes are bright silver or bluish-white.
  2. Hot-dip galvanized square tubes have visible zinc patterns and feel very rough, while cold-dip galvanized square tubes have an extremely uniform and smooth surface.

Why is Galvanized Square Pipe Used?

Square galvanized pipe combine the advantages of both galvanized and square tubes, resulting in high-quality galvanized square pipes. They offer the superior corrosion resistance of the zinc coating while also withstanding tensile, compressive, and impact loads. This ensures a longer service life. Furthermore, the square tubes are aesthetically pleasing, while the zinc coating imparts a metallic sheen. Whether considering performance or aesthetics, galvanized square tubes are undoubtedly the superior choice.

Can Square Galvanized Pipe Be Welded?

Galvanized square tubes are fully weldable, but welding them is more difficult than welding ordinary square tubes, and requires more precautions. The galvanized layer easily produces toxic zinc fumes during welding, and welding the galvanized layer can easily damage the galvanized layer, resulting in a decrease in corrosion resistance. Therefore, different welding methods are required depending on the type of galvanizing. Manual arc welding and submerged arc welding are used for hot-dip galvanized square tubes, while manual arc welding and gas shielded welding are used for cold-dip galvanized square tubes. After welding, the slag and oxide layer must be removed to avoid affecting the corrosion resistance of the galvanized square tube.

    • Although galvanized square pipes can be welded, we do not recommend using welded square pipes. You can use threaded connections, groove connections, flange connections, and other connection methods that do not damage the galvanized layer.
