What is ASTM A270?
ASTM A270 is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This standard specifies three processes: seamless, welded, and EFW. It is a standard for sanitary-grade piping for austenitic and ferritic stainless steel. It has an extremely high sanitation level and is suitable for processing equipment such as food and dairy products.

ASTM A270 Chemical Properties
Dimensional Tolerances – ASTM A270/A270M-24
Wall thickness tolerance
ASTM A270 stipulates that the wall thickness at any point cannot exceed 12.5% of the required wall thickness.
Outside diameter tolerance
The standard specifies different tolerances for outer diameters.
Outer diameter ≤ 25.4,Allowable deviation: ±0.13°
Outer diameter > 25.4° to 50.8°,Allowable deviation: ±0.20°
Outer diameter > 50.8° to 76.2°,Allowable deviation: ±0.25°
Outer diameter > 76.2° to 101.6°,Allowable deviation: ±0.38°
Outer diameter > 101.6° to 139.7°,Allowable deviation: ±0.38°

ASTM A270 Roughness Average
The reason why ASTM A270 is a sanitary standard is that it has strict requirements for the average surface roughness, making the surface smooth and flat, easy to clean, and not conducive to bacterial growth.
-
- The ASTM A270 standard specifies a surface Ra value of no higher than 0.8 μm.
- For applications requiring higher hygiene standards, the Ra value is controlled below 0.4 μm or even 0.2 μm.
This standard specifies two polishing methods: mechanical polishing and electrolytic polishing
-
- Mechanical polishing: Polishing is performed using abrasives. Different types of grinders produce varying degrees of finish.
- Electrolytic polishing: Utilizing the principles of electrochemical processing, it produces a bright, reflective surface with enhanced corrosion resistance and cleanliness.
ASTM A270 Manufacturing Process
ASTM A270 standard covers three processes: ERW, SMLS, and EFW
ERW
This is a very common manufacturing process that uses resistance welding technology. The pipe is first heated and then pressurized for welding.
SMLS
Seamless pipes are also very common in our daily use. They are integral pipes formed by extrusion and have no welding points.
HLD
This process is not common in our daily life. Its full name is rapid cooling treatment pipe. Its core is to perform cold processing before retreating, so that the pipe can be cooled rapidly, so that the wall thickness and weld thickness shrinkage rate is not less than 35%.
