SSAW stands for spiral submerged arc welded pipe/tube. It is a kind of steel pipe produced by spiral seam submerged arc welding technology. SSAW and ERW (resistance welded steel pipe) and LSAW (straight seam submerged arc welded steel pipe) are the three very main steel pipe production processes. With its unique characteristics and manufacturing process, spiral submerged arc welded pipes are widely used in engineering and infrastructure.
SSAW Carbon Steel Pipe Specifications And Standards
SSAW Carbon Steel Pipe Specifications/ Dimensions
The specifications of SSAW steel pipe mainly cover three aspects: outer diameter, wall thickness and length.
OD (outer diameter) : 219.1 to 2032mm
NPS: 8 ” – 80 ”
DN: 200-2000
Thickness: 6 – 25.4mm
SCH 20 – SCH XXS
Length: 6-12 meters
SSAW Steel Pipe Standards
The production process of SSAW steel pipes strictly complies with national and regional standards. To ensure that the pipes produced have the best quality and performance.
Spiral submerged arc welded pipe covers but is not limited to the following standards.
- API 5L is a standard published by the American Petroleum Institute. Mainly for oil and gas pipelines.
- ASTM A53 is a standard published by the American Society for Materials and Testing. It is mainly used to specify the requirements for welded, straight and spiral welded steel pipes for high temperature, high pressure and low temperature applications.
- EN 10210 is a European standard. Mainly for welded steel pipes for pressure vessels and pipelines.
SSAW Steel Pipe Surface Treatment/Application
Carbon SSAW Steel Pipe Surface Treatment
Surface treatment can improve the surface state of the steel pipe, improve the mechanical properties of the steel pipe, and extend the service life of the device.
- Removal of oxide: usually by pickling and sandblasting process. Pickling dissolves oxides on the surface of steel pipes with an acidic solution. Sand blasting removes the oxide and rust on the surface of the steel pipe by spraying abrasives at high speed.
- Spraying anti-corrosion coating: generally using epoxy resin coating and polyurethane coating.
- Hot-dip galvanizing treatment: the steel pipe is pre-treated such as pickling, cleaning and passivation treatment, and then immersed in the molten zinc solution to form a zinc layer.

SSAW Steel Pipe/Tube Application
- Urban water supply system: ssaw steel pipe with its excellent strength and corrosion resistance, to ensure the stability of the urban water supply pipeline system.
- Building frame: Good bearing capacity makes it widely used in high-rise buildings and large industrial plants in the structural frame.
- Mine pipeline: mainly responsible for ore transportation and ventilation pipes in the mine.
- Long distance pipeline: Long distance transportation can play to its advantages of bearing pressure and external environment.
SSAW Steel Pipe/Tube Conclusion
SSAW Carbon Steel Pipe/Tube through continuous technological innovation and quality control, has been widely used in the world, and provides a strong support for the modern industrial field.
1. What are the disadvantages of spiral welded pipe
SSAW steel pipes also have some disadvantages.
Welding defects: In the welding process, it is easy to produce porosity, non-fusion and slag inclusion and other weld defects.
Strength and pressure resistance: Mechanical properties may be slightly less than straight welded pipes due to the spiral weld orientation and pipe axis.
2. What is the difference between ssaw and lsaw pipes
The weld of the steel pipe manufactured by the spiral submerged arc welded process is spiral, which has low requirements on the equipment because of its low production cost and is suitable for mass production of large diameter pipes. On the other hand, its strength and stability are not as good as that of straight seam steel pipe.
The steel pipe manufactured by LSAW process is welded longitudinally by submerged arc welding technology. High strength and stability, suitable for the production of large diameter and wall thickness of the steel pipe.
